Trump says Iran now wants to talk, but it is "too late"
US President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran wants to negotiate, but that it is now "too late".
In a brief post of a few lines, Trump said he sees no point in holding negotiations with Iran now.
"Their air defence, Air Force, Navy, and Leadership is gone. They want to talk. I said 'Too Late!'," Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social. He did not specify when Iran had made such overtures or who had conveyed them.
However, on Sunday, after the first day of strikes on Iran and the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Trump said the country's new leadership had asked to speak with him and that he planned to do so.
On Monday, Trump said he has not categorically ruled out the possibility of sending American troops to Iranian territory.
As of 3 March, six US service members are known to have been killed in the operation.
