US Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer has condemned President Donald Trump's threat to make "a whole civilization die" and called him "an extremely sick person".

As reported by The Wall Street Journal, Schumer called on the Republican Party to intervene and exert influence on Trump.

"This [Trump] is an extremely sick person. Each Republican who refuses to join us in voting against this wanton war of choice owns every consequence of whatever the hell this is." Schumer said.

Schumer was also supported by House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries.

"Congress must immediately end this reckless war of choice in Iran before Donald Trump plunges us into World War III. It's time for every single Republican to put patriotic duty over party and stop the madness," Jeffries said.

Trump earlier issued a fresh round of threats against Iran, saying that "a whole civilization will die tonight".

Following that statement, The Wall Street Journal reported Iran halted direct communication with the United States.
