The vast majority of Germans, French and Italians support Ukraine's accession to the EU

A large-scale survey conducted simultaneously in four EU countries, including three "Eurosceptic" countries, showed historically high support for Ukraine's EU membership by citizens of these countries.

This public opinion survey held in Germany, France, Italy and Poland, shows prevailing public support for Ukraine's accession to the EU, reports European Pravda.

The level of support was the lowest in France, but even there it is high - 62% of citizens support the accession, 38% oppose it. In Germany, support for accession is significantly higher, with 69% in favour of Ukraine's EU membership. Italy has shown 71% in support of accession.

With even higher level of support in Eastern Europe (91% in Poland), researchers believe that all-European support is around 71%.

Also, after the Russian aggression, 68% of Europeans are now inclined to have greater security integration within the EU, i.e. creation of the so-called "European army". Support for the joint army is lowest in Italy (59%), in Germany and France it is 66-68%.

Germany and France have reportedly been among a few sceptical countries to oppose the accelerated procedure for granting candidate status to Ukraine at the EU summit in Versailles, arguing that it has no support in their society. European Pravda has already explained that this can be changed by mass demonstrations in support of our membership and explained how ordinary Ukrainians can influence this (read that article in English).

The survey was conducted jointly by the French Jean Jaurès Foundation and the Ukrainian Yalta European Strategy (YES). Between March 3 and 7, at their request, sociological companies surveyed over 4,000 people representing the population of Germany, France, Italy and Poland over the age of 18. The data were also interpolated to estimate all-European picture, given that these 4 countries represent the views of the EU regions, and taking into account the distribution of population in these regions.
