Ukrainians Consider NATO Best Guarantee of National Security - Survey

Thursday, 29 December 2022

Ukraine's NATO accession is considered by the majority of Ukrainian citizens to be the best option for guaranteeing national security after Russian aggression.

The survey was conducted by the Democratic Initiatives Foundation and the sociological department of the Razumkov Center in cooperation with European Pravda.

48.9% of respondents said that NATO membership would guarantee Ukraine's security in the future. 16.7% believe in developing their own Military Forces and defence industry (following the example of Israel or Switzerland).

About 10% consider the best option an agreement on strategic defence cooperation with several allies (for example, Poland, the Baltic states) without the United States.

8.5% of respondents support a non-aligned or neutral status with international security guarantees for Ukraine. 6.7% of respondents like the idea of an agreement on strategic defence cooperation with the USA.

The rest 10% did not have an opinion.

Ukrainians don't have one opinion regarding the possible terms of joining NATO. 25.3% of respondents believe that Ukraine's NATO accession is possible after the victory and the implementation of the necessary reforms.

Nearly as many (24.9%) are sure that accession may happen immediately after the victory against Russia. Another 18.8% consider it realistic to join NATO even before the victory in the war.

16.2% of respondents consider Ukraine's accession to NATO unlikely even after victory and reforms, and almost 15% of respondents do not have an opinion.

The survey was conducted from December 13 to 21, 2022. The sample did not include residents of territories that were not temporarily controlled by the authorities of Ukraine until February 24, 2022, and where hostilities did not take place. 2018 respondents were interviewed based on a sample that reproduces the demographic structure of the adult population of these territories in early 2022.

Earlier, the Secretary General of NATO stated that the primary task of the Alliance countries is to help Ukraine in the war with Russia, and only after its victory to talk about full membership.
