Germany to Send Leopard 2 Tanks to Ukraine - Government's Decision

Wednesday, 25 January 2023

The German government announced on Wednesday to provide the Ukrainian armed forces with Leopard-2 main battle tanks.

"Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced on Wednesday at a government meeting that Germany will continue strengthening its military support for Ukraine. The Federal Government has decided to provide the Ukrainian armed forces with Leopard-2 main battle tanks. This is the result of intensive consultations with the closest European and Germany's international partners," states the government's website.

It is noted that the goal of the allies is to quickly assemble two tank battalions with Leopard 2 tanks for Ukraine.

In the first phase, Germany will provide a company of 14 Leopard 2 A6 tanks from the Bundeswehr. Other European partners will, in turn, transfer Leopard-2 tanks.

Training of Ukrainian crews should begin soon in Germany. In addition to training, the package will also include logistics, ammunition, and systems maintenance.

"Germany will provide partner countries that want to transfer Leopard-2 tanks to Ukraine with appropriate permits," the statement said.

On January 25th, a decision on sending M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine may be announced.

The Wall Street Journal was the first to report that the US President administration is inclined to provide Ukraine with M1 Abrams tanks in "significant quantities."

The decision is expected to be part of a "broader diplomatic arrangement" with Germany, in which Berlin will agree to send fewer of its Leopard 2 tanks and approve the delivery of more of these tanks by Poland and other countries.
