Germany to Hand over Patriot to Ukraine by Spring, Ukrainians to Be Trained on Marder BMP for Eight Weeks

Friday, 6 January 2023

Germany will supply Ukraine with around 40 Marder infantry fighting vehicles within the first three months of 2023 as part of a new phase of support coordinated with the US.

German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit shared it with journalists in Berlin on Friday.

Hebestreit has also confirmed that Germany plans to send around 40 Marder infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine in the first quarter of 2023.

"These 40 vehicles are to be ready in the first quarter so that they can then be handed over to Ukraine," he said, adding that training for Ukrainian soldiers to use the vehicles would be provided in Germany.

On January 5, after a conversation between the US and German leaders, Joe Biden and Olaf Scholz, it became known that the US would provide Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles while Germany would supply Marder Infantry Fighting Vehicles.

In addition, following the United States, Germany will supply Ukraine with an additional battery of the Patriot missile defence system.

The American side will also train Ukrainians to use their BMP, but where exactly - in the US or in Germany - is currently unknown.
