Poland Sent Ten More Leopard 2 to Ukraine — Minister of Defence

Thursday, 9 March 2023

Ukrainian troops completed their training on Leopard 2 tanks in Poland, and Ukraine received the remaining 10 of 14 promised by Poland tanks.

"We support Ukraine within the international coalition. In addition to 14 Polish Leopard tanks, this battalion also includes four tanks from Canada, eight tanks from Norway, and six from Spain," said Mariusz Błaszczak, Minister of National Defence of Poland, at a briefing on Thursday.

He mentions that he is negotiating with his Spanish colleague Margarita Robles regarding more tanks to Ukraine - "perhaps four more."

"So we are certainly dealing with a battalion of heavy tanks. In the Polish case, we have already sent them. In the case of our allies, the tanks will be sent to Ukraine very soon," he pointed out.

The Polish Minister of Defence also recalled the idea of setting up a maintenance hub for Leopard 2 tanks in Poland, which he is discussing with Germany.

"The problem is spare parts for these tanks. Twenty years ago, their production stopped. We are ready to resume it. Of course, in cooperation with the Germans, we are discussing that the Leopard tanks for Ukraine should be maintained in Poland," Błaszczak explained.

Poland handed over the first four of 14 Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine on the anniversary of the full-scale invasion of Russia on February 24. Warsaw will also send 60 PT-91 Twardy tanks.
