Zelenskyy provides details on operation of initiative for procuring US weapons
President Volodymyr Zelensky has revealed that six NATO member states have already funded four packages of defence assistance to Ukraine, totalling over US$2 billion under the PURL (Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List) initiative, with another six countries ready to contribute.
As reported by the Office of the President of Ukraine, Zelenskyy said that the first package, worth US$578 million, was financed by the Netherlands. The second package, totalling US$495 million, was funded by Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The third package, US$500 million, came from Germany. The fourth package, also US$500 million, was announced by Canada.
Deliveries of the first two packages began in mid-September. Additionally, the US has finalised, together with Canada and Germany, the contents of the third and fourth packages, Zelenskyy added.
"The initiative is working, providing very active assistance – it is precisely the mechanism that allows us to purchase American weapons with funding from our NATO partners. These include items such as missiles for Patriots and missiles for HIMARS," he emphasised.
Zelenskyy noted that the US is currently coordinating the fifth and sixth packages with Ukraine, while preparations are already underway for the seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth packages. Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Luxembourg, Belgium and Iceland have expressed readiness to contribute to the fifth package.
Ukraine aims to further expand the programme in October, with an overall goal of adding US$1 billion each month.
The US and NATO launched the PURL mechanism in early August, allowing Alliance members to fund American weapons for Ukraine.
Since then, European countries have pledged roughly US$2 billion for the initiative, with NATO aiming to raise up to US$10 billion in total.
