Kallas: Ukraine cannot defeat Russia alone

Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has emphasised the importance of continuing and increasing support for Ukraine, as she believes it will not be able to win the war against Russia on its own.

Kallas said in an interview with German newspaper Zeit she believes in Ukraine's ability to defeat Russia in the war.

In this context, she reiterated remarks by US President Donald Trump, who said he is optimistic about Ukraine's chances of regaining control over its territory within internationally recognised borders.

"Ukrainians have the will to do this. If we continue to support Ukraine, it will be able to liberate even more territory and push Russia further back. But, of course, it cannot do this alone. That is why it is so important that we continue to increase our support," Kallas stressed.

She emphasised that the stronger Ukraine is militarily, the stronger it will be at the negotiating table.

Kallas also noted that Russian forces have occupied around one per cent of Ukraine's territory over the past 1,000 days, while suffering very heavy losses.

"Russia is skilled in wearing others down. Putin is relying on this 'ability'. He believes he has more endurance than Europeans, but he is wrong. Wars end when one of the warring sides runs out of resources to continue fighting. And today we can see that the Russian economy is not in the best condition," she added.

Meanwhile, Trump said he is confident that he will eventually succeed in resolving the war that Russia is waging against Ukraine.
