The European Commission announced on Thursday 29 January that it will provide €145 million in emergency assistance to Ukraine amid intensified Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure.

The funds allocated by the European Union will be used to provide protection, shelter, food, cash assistance, psychosocial support, access to water and medical services for Ukrainians.

"Our solidarity with Ukraine is not a slogan, it is reliable, sustained humanitarian action driven strictly by needs on the ground," said Hadja Lahbib, Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management.

The European Commission is also allocating €8 million to Moldova to support Ukrainian refugees who have arrived in the country.

Last week, the European Commission announced the delivery of 447 backup generators worth €3.7 million from the EU's strategic reserves to help restore electricity supply to hospitals, shelters and critical services in Ukraine.

On 27 January, a shipment of 76 emergency generators from the EU's strategic reserves arrived in Kyiv

Poland is reportedly set to supply Ukraine with 379 electricity generators and 18 heaters from the Government Agency for Strategic Reserves, following a decision by Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Meanwhile, the Lithuanian government announced that it is urgently transferring 90 generators worth more than €2 million to Ukraine.
