Ukraine and Western partners are discussing a contingency plan in the event that Russia violates a potential ceasefire, including possible the involvement of US military forces.

According to Financial Times sources, the plan was repeatedly discussed in December and January among Ukrainian, European and US officials.

Under the proposal, any violation of the ceasefire by Russia would trigger a response within 24 hours. Initially, this would involve a diplomatic warning, followed if necessary by actions from the Ukrainian military to restore the ceasefire.

If hostilities continue despite these steps, Ukraine and its allies would move to a second phase – the deployment of the Coalition of the Willing forces, which includes most EU members as well as the UK, Norway, Iceland and Türkiye.

Sources added that if the attack escalates, a coordinated Western-backed military response, including US forces, would be launched 72 hours after the first violation.

The Ukrainian negotiating team departed for Abu Dhabi, where a new round of trilateral talks with representatives of Ukraine, the US and Russia will take place on 4 and 5 February.

On 2 February, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that he had set specific tasks for the negotiating team ahead of the meetings with Russia and the US and confirmed readiness for a bilateral security guarantees document involving the US.

US President Donald Trump's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff will reportedly attend the next round of Ukraine-Russia talks in Abu Dhabi on 4 and 5 February.
