Valdis Dombrovskis, European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity, has said G7 finance ministers will discuss Russia's war against Ukraine, the war in Iran and the situation involving the Strait of Hormuz at their meeting in Paris.

According to Sky News, Dombrovskis said the G7 meeting in Paris will be used to reaffirm the need to reopen the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible after Iran closed the waterway in response to joint US and Israeli attacks in February.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, for his part, said he will urge his counterparts to comply with sanctions against Tehran to prevent the funding of Iran's "war machine".

He added that last week's US trip to China, led by President Donald Trump, had been "very successful".

The G7 comprises Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as representatives of the European Union.

On 12 May, Trump expressed confidence that he can secure an agreement with Iran on the desired terms "peacefully or otherwise".

Meanwhile, CNN has reported that the Pentagon has prepared a range of military plans for Iran in case Trump decides to resume attacks.
