Media: Macron seeks to steer Trump towards "right decisions on Ukraine"

French President Emmanuel Macron, who is due to meet US President Donald Trump on 21 September, intends to encourage him to make the "right decisions" regarding Russia's war against Ukraine.

BFMTV sources said Macron plans to have a "frank discussion" with Trump and "steer" him towards increasing support for Ukraine and stepping up pressure on Russia.

"It is always a good opportunity to set the tone before the start of this high-level week at the General Assembly and to speak openly with the US president, as the President of the Republic always does," the sources told BFMTV.

"As at every critical moment, this will be an opportunity to steer President Trump towards the right decisions, particularly on Ukraine, to continue efforts to support Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia," they added.

The two presidents are due to meet at 17:35 New York time (00:35 Kyiv time), before the UN General Assembly opens.

During his visit to the US, Macron is also expected to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Ukrainska Pravda sources in the President's Office say Zelenskyy is expected to meet Trump in New York on 22 September.

During a phone call on 20 September, Zelenskyy and Trump agreed to meet in person on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

US digital news outlet Axios reported earlier that during a conversation with Zelenskyy about their planned meeting in New York, Trump asked Ukraine to stop strikes on Russian oil refineries.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Russia has lost control of its oil refining industry and urged Russia to end its "never-ending War" against Ukraine.
