Poland has formally opened a Norwegian-led military training camp for Ukrainian defence forces.

The Polish Ministry of Defence reported that Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz had taken part in the inauguration ceremony of Camp Jomsborg on 1 October.

The event was also attended by Norwegian Defence Minister Tore O. Sandvik, Estonian Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur and Ukrainian Deputy Defence Minister Yurii Myronenko.

The camp, based at the Nowa Dęba-Lipa Land Forces Training Centre, has been established by the Norwegian Armed Forces as part of an international initiative, with Poland acting as the host nation.

"This demonstrates the ability to train Ukrainian service personnel on a vast scale, close to Ukraine – on Subcarpathian soil, in a good location, at a training ground is now seeing a new lease of life. I would like to thank the Norwegian Armed Forces, the government of the Kingdom of Norway, the minister and everyone who has contributed," Kosiniak-Kamysz said.

Camp Jomsborg is described as one of the biggest Norwegian military camps ever set up by Norway abroad that hosts several hundred Norwegian troops.

The training programme offers highly realistic combat simulations and specialised modules. The first of these focuses on combat stress and methods of control.

Norwegian instructors are expected to not only pass on their expertise but also learn from Ukrainian combat veterans and gain insights into the latest battlefield trends.

In late summer, European Union member states agreed to send military instructors to Ukraine as part of the EUMAM training mission for Ukrainian troops, which will form part of the EU's contribution to security guarantees for Ukraine once a ceasefire is established.
