Zelenskyy meets with Estonian foreign minister to discuss long-range weapons and pressure on Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna in Kyiv on Monday 27 October.

The meeting focused on long-range capabilities, drone production and overall defence support for Ukraine.

The president thanked Estonia for its contribution to the PURL initiative, which allows Ukraine and European partners to purchase American weapons.

Discussions also covered cooperation between Ukraine and the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF).

Special attention was given to ways of increasing pressure on Russia. Estonian proposals on tariffs and the preparation of the European Union's 20th sanctions package were discussed.

Zelenskyy and Tsahkna also discussed priorities for Estonia's chairmanship of the Nordic-Baltic Eight next year. Estonia plans to focus its attention on issues related to supporting Ukraine. These include defence assistance, EU accession, reconstruction, security cooperation and the use of frozen Russian assets.

Diplomatic efforts were also addressed. The president briefed the Estonian diplomat on contact with the US and other partners.

Zelenskyy awarded the Order of Merit, Second Class, to Tsahkna and expressed gratitude for Estonia's significant support for Ukraine.

On 27 October, Estonia and Ukraine signed a memorandum of understanding, in which Tallinn expressed readiness to host the Ukraine Recovery Conference in 2027.

Tsahkna also announced the allocation of funds to support the Ukrainian energy sector ahead of winter.
