Kremlin expects "pragmatic contact" with Hungary to continue after Orbán's defeat
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia expects "pragmatic contact" between Moscow and Budapest to continue with Hungary's new leadership.
As reported by Interfax, Peskov stated that Russia regards Hungary's choice "with respect".
"We expect to continue our very pragmatic contact with Hungary's new leadership," he said.
The Kremlin spokesman also called for "patience" to observe the further steps of Hungary's new leadership.
"We are, I repeat once again, interested in establishing good relations with Hungary, as with all European countries. We know that, as far as European countries are concerned, unfortunately, one cannot yet speak of reciprocity, but Russia is open to dialogue," Peskov added.
A few hours after polling stations closed in Hungary on 11 April, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, after 16 years in power, conceded defeat and congratulated his opponents on their victory.
With approximately 99% of votes counted in Hungary, the results confirm a convincing victory for the opposition Tisza party led by Péter Magyar, with a constitutional majority.
Magyar has announced a reset of the system built up during Orbán's years in power and has promised that Hungary will once again be a reliable partner in the EU and NATO.
