Macron criticises Russia for overnight attack on Kyiv and Oblast

French President Emmanuel Macron has condemned a large-scale Russian attack on Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast on the night of 4-5 August.

Macron said Russia's "policy of terror, carried out using missiles and drones, is unacceptable".

"Each new attack once again confirms one obvious fact: Russia must pay for its aggression and be held accountable for its crimes. Standing shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine, we will not give in to fatigue or intimidation," the French president said on X.

He also added that the European Union and its partners will continue to increase pressure on Russia, including by imposing new sanctions, while stepping up military support for Ukraine.

Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže, who was in Kyiv that night, said she had spent the night in a shelter and expressed her condolences to Ukrainians who lost their loved ones during the attack.

EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarína Mathernová said Russia is trying to break Kyiv through constant ballistic missile strikes and that this reality must not become "normal".
