European Commission wants to accelerate establishment of "tribunal for Putin" for crime of aggression
The European Union is continuing to insist on Russia's full responsibility for crimes against Ukraine and, in particular, on the swift completion of the establishment of the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine.
The EU wants to finalise the establishment of the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine, which concerns the order by Kremlin ruler Vladimir Putin to attack Ukraine, as soon as possible.
"First of all, the position of the European Union will continue to be that there should be full accountability for Russian crimes in Ukraine. That is our position, and it will remain our position," Michael McGrath, EU Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection, told European Pravda.
He said it is "vital" to ensure "that those who are the victims of the crime of aggression perpetrated by Russia have their rights vindicated and that they have justice served to them".
"That is why we will proceed with our international partners as quickly as possible with the formal establishment of the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine," the Commissioner said.
He added that "next week will be a very significant milestone" in this process: the EU plans to join the establishment of the "tribunal for Putin".
"The Commission is preparing a proposal on the signing of the enlarged partial agreement of the Special Tribunal, with a view to becoming one of its founding members. Today, I encouraged member states to do the same," he said.
McGrath also pointed out that the European Commission has pledged to provide €10 million to support the swift establishment of the Special Tribunal.
In June 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Alain Berset, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, signed an agreement to establish the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine.
The future Special Tribunal will enable investigations against the highest leadership of Russia, including against Putin.
