Reconstruction of Ukraine Is a Common Task in Democratic World - Zelensky in Lugano

Monday, 4 July 2022

President Volodymyr Zelensky, during his online speech at the Lugano Conference, shared his vision for reconstructing the destroyed regions and emphasized the need for reforms.

Zelensky underlined Ukraine would develop its reconstruction plan as a common platform for all initiatives.

"I am grateful to the European Commission for the initiative to set up a special European platform for Ukrainian reconstruction. However, all initiatives, plans, and ambitions must be coordinated on the same platform. Therefore, Ukraine offers its national reconstruction plan based on the possibility to implement every initiative," Zelensky said.

The President pointed out the key reconstruction principles, including safety, technology, compliance with environmental standards, green technologies, barrier-free principles, focus on communities, maximum transparency, and creating new jobs and new productions in Ukraine.

Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine obtained EU candidacy, which will require reforms.

"The road to EU membership requires reforms, but the reconstruction of Ukraine also requires reforms. We still have to strengthen our institutions and update living standards. Our goal is for Ukraine to become not only the freest country in Europe, the most convenient for life and business. But also, we want to complete the political part the fastest of all those who have joined the European Union. We can do it," the President said.

He added that the reconstruction of Ukraine after the war was not a local project but a common task in the democratic world.

Leaders from over 40 countries and 20 international organizations are meeting in Switzerland to discuss a recovery plan for Ukraine. They will create "the roadmap" to the country's recovery.
