Ukraine Accomplished "Everything Possible" to Implement EU Requirements - Stefanishyna

Tuesday, 27 December 2022

The government of Ukraine believes that all steps have been taken to implement the seven requirements of the European Commission, which are needed to assess Kyiv's success in joining the EU.

According to "European Pravda," Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanishyna said this during the telethon on Tuesday.

She has reminded that Ukraine unblocked the appointment of the head of the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office. Stefanishyna also hopes the competition for appointing the head of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau will be completed soon.

In addition, the Verkhovna Rada adopted three crucial laws at the end of the year, which, according to Stefanishyna, "did not find a political consensus for almost a decade": on national minorities, on media, and the competitive procedure for the formation and selection of judges of the Constitutional Court.

"We have accomplished everything that could be done, organised, and provided from these seven requirements. Everything that required political consensus to launch competitions and adopt legislation," the Deputy Prime Minister said.

She reminded that the European Union, upon Ukraine's request, agreed to early assess the seven requirements, which is supposed to happen in the spring of 2023.

"Progress on the Ukrainian side is dynamic. We are not ready to wait another year (until the autumn of 2023) for a political assessment. That is why we expect that in early March, we will assess our steps together with the European Union and get ready to start accession negotiations," Stefanishyna noted.

The EU insisted on the first assessment of progress and recommendations in the autumn of 2023. This meant postponing the process of Ukraine's European integration for at least half a year, which would move the official start of accession negotiations until the formation of a new commission.
