Thursday, 12 January 2023

Chief Ombudsman of Türkiye Şeref Malkoç on Thursday announced the telephone conversation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan with Ukrainian and Russian Presidents Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin.

The Turkish ombudsman has shared with reporters that he had asked Erdoğan to back the idea of setting up a permanent "humanitarian corridor" in war zone. He said the Turkish president welcomed the idea.

"If we can succeed after such a meeting, if we can succeed in the mutual exchange of injured in Russia or Ukraine, the exchange of children or women, it will be one of the most significant matters of this meeting," added Malkoç, referring to the meeting of Ukrainian and Russian ombudsmen in Ankara, reports the media outlet Milliyet.

He added that the administration of the Turkish president has already started the necessary work to set up a humanitarian corridor.

"I would like to announce that our president will have a telephone conversation with Mr. Zelenskyy and Mr. Putin today or tomorrow on this matter. After then, it's up to us. We will coordinate together," the Turkish ombudsman said.

Erdoğan said that Türkiye backs a humanitarian corridor for those injured in Russia's war against Ukraine.

As reported, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Turkey, has expressed support for the "peace formula" proposed by Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, at the G20 summit in November 2022.
