"No One Attacking Russia": Putin's Anti-Western Accusations Called Absurd in U.S.

Tuesday, 21 February 2023

The United States rejected Russian President Vladimir Putin's claims that the West had provoked the war.

As BFMTV reports, Putin in his address to the nation on Tuesday said Russia's invasion of Ukraine was justified by Western threats. White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan reacted by denouncing the "absurdity" of the speech.

"No one is attacking Russia. There is a kind of absurdity in the idea that Russia was under some form of military threat from Ukraine or anyone else," Jake Sullivan told reporters.

Pre-announcing Joe Biden's speech, scheduled for Tuesday at 18:30 Kyiv time from the Royal Castle in Warsaw, Jake Sullivan said that he "will not present any plan to end the war diplomatically."

Instead, he will focus on the broader lesson to be learned from the war in Ukraine in what he sees as an "inflection point" in a global struggle between democracies and autocratic regimes.

Joe Biden's remarks will focus on Ukraine, but also "the broader ongoing struggle between aggressors trying to destroy fundamental principles and democracies coming together to try to uphold them."
