Bundesrat Adopts Resolution in Support of Ukraine

Friday, 3 March 2023

The Bundesrat, which represents the sixteen Länder (federated states) of Germany, on Friday unanimously adopted a resolution in support of Ukraine on the anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion.

The document demands the Russian Federation withdraw its troops from the entire territory of Ukraine and prosecute the Russian leadership and military for war crimes committed during the full-scale invasion.

In addition, the Bundesrat supports further European Union sanctions against Russia, increasing military assistance to Ukraine and promoting its EU membership.

The possibility of cooperation between German and Ukrainian regions, in particular through sister cities, in matters of education, science, culture, police and justice, which could contribute to the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine, is underlined separately.

Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany Oleksii Makeev was present during the voting in the Bundesrat.

"It is very important for us to express the solidarity of the 16 German federal states with Ukraine. We stand next to you, we share your suffering and scrabble together after the dead," the DPA agency quotes the President of the Bundesrat, Peter Tschentscher.

The day before, the "left" faction in the Bundestag was defeated in an attempt to stop sending weapons to Ukraine (Ukr) and focus on diplomacy.
