Pentagon Announces New Military Assistance Package for Ukraine Worth $1.2 Billion

On Tuesday, May 9, the Pentagon announced a new military assistance package of $1.2 billion to Ukraine.

According to the Pentagon press office, the assistance package is aimed at enhancing Ukraine's air defence capabilities and providing support to the Armed Forces with munition. This package is being provided under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI).

The capabilities in this package include:

  • Additional air defense systems and munitions;
  • Equipment to integrate Western air defense launchers, missiles, and radars with Ukraine's air defense systems;
  • Ammunition for counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems;
  • 155mm artillery rounds;
  • Commercial satellite imagery services;
  • Support for training, maintenance, and sustainment activities.

On May 3, the US allocated a $300 million assistance package for Ukraine (Ukr), which included additional ammunition for the HIMARS systems, additional howitzers, artillery and mortar shells, as well as anti-tank weapons used by Ukraine to counter unprovoked Russian aggression.
