Number of Ukrainians with temporary protection in EU increases

As of 30 June, 4.41 million people in EU countries had been granted temporary protection under the mechanism established to provide refuge to Ukrainians following the start of the full-scale war.

According to the EU's statistical office Eurostat, in June, the number of Ukrainians with temporary protection in EU countries increased by 24,380, up 0.6% compared with May.

The largest increases in temporary protection beneficiaries in June were recorded in Italy (more than 4,100 people), Czechia (over 3,800) and Germany (almost 3,000).

Nonetheless, the largest decreases in the number of people with temporary protection status were recorded in Poland (more than 6,300), Belgium (35) and Ireland (15).

Germany hosts the largest number of Ukrainians under temporary protection at more than 1.28 million, accounting for 29.2% of the EU total. Poland follows, hosting more than 960,000 people (21.8%), while Czechia has more than 390,000 (8.9%).

Relative to the population of the host countries, the highest concentrations of Ukrainians were recorded in Czechia, Slovakia and Cyprus.

Ukrainian citizens remain by far the largest group among temporary protection beneficiaries, accounting for 98.5% of the total. Women account for 43.4%, adult men for 27%, and minors for 29.6%.

In late July, the European Union extended temporary protection for Ukrainians until 4 March 2028, introducing a new provision under which newly arrived Ukrainian citizens liable for military service will be eligible for the status only if there are no issues with their military registration documents.

Czech authorities reported that last year, for the first time, more Ukrainian men than women were granted temporary protection in the country.
