Ukraine Revealed the List of Countries Opposing Fast Ukraine-EU Rapprochement

Friday, 25 March 2022

President Volodymyr Zelenskyi released information about states that have expressed scepticism about fastened Ukraine's accession to the European Union and those who have been hesitant about it.

This is reported by EuroPravda in the article "From Lithuania to Hungary" (in Ukrainian).

On Thursday, the President addressed a summit via video link with an emotional speech, referring to the victims of the brutal Russian attack. He recalled that the EU's response to the Kremlin's actions over the past 8 years has almost always been late and asked EU leaders for a strong and timely decision on Ukraine's accelerated accession to the European Union.

"Ukraine should be in the EU in the near future. At least you have everything you need for that," he said.

After that, Zelensky named all EU countries, indicating those whose position raises doubts. According to European Pravda, this list is based on data from closed discussions in the EU and Kyiv's negotiations with some of these countries.

Zelensky named 10 states that do not hide their pro-Ukrainian position in the accession discussions, describing them as "in our favour".

These are Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, and Croatia. The President singled out Italy, which at first had doubts. Still, later, after Zelensky's speech in parliament, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said the EU was preparing positive decisions for Ukraine. "Thank you for your support!" Zelensky turned to Draghi.

Next, the President named a group of 9 other countries, using positive but more vague wording. According to the EP, the countries included in this group are not clear supporters of the accelerated procedure of Ukraine's accession to the EU but will vote "yes" when considering Ukrainian issues. This group includes France, Greece, Finland, Malta, Denmark, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Sweden, and Romania. The position of the latter country is special.

"Portugal is close ... The Netherlands is for rationality, so we will find a common language. Spain - we will find a common language. Belgium - we will find arguments. Austria - together with the Ukrainians - this is an opportunity for you. Ireland - almost."

Separately from this list, Volodymyr Zelenskyy named Hungary. In recent weeks, the Hungarian government has made a number of anti-Ukrainian, unacceptable statements. A quarter of Hungarian ruling party voters accuse Kyiv of war. Volodymyr Zelensky addressed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban at the summit, reminding him of the history of Hungary during Hitler's Germany.

"I was in Budapest, on your embankment. I saw The Shoes on the Danube Bank Memorial. Listen, Victor, do you know what's going on in Mariupol? Go up to your embankment, look at those shoes, and you'll see how massacres can happen again." , - Zelensky emotionally expressed.

This is a memorial on the banks of the Danube, at the site of the Nazi massacre of Hungarian Jews. Before the murder, they were forced to take off their shoes, which were then sold or taken away by the Nazis.

Zelensky ended his speech by mentioning the state that is currently a key opponent of the country's integration into the EU - Germany.

"We believe that Germany will also be with us at the crucial moment. Glory to Ukraine!",- the President said.
