Germany, France, Italy, and Romania Back Immediate EU Candidate Status for Ukraine

Thursday, 16 June 2022

After a meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, the leaders of Germany, Italy, Romania, and France called for "immediate" EU candidate status for Ukraine, reports BFMTV.

"Germany is in favor of a positive decision for Ukraine. It also applies to the Republic of Moldova. Ukraine is part of the European family," German media quoted Scholz.

French President Emmanuel Macron also supports the idea.

"All four of us support the status of immediate candidate for membership," said Emmanuel Macron.

"This status will be accompanied by a roadmap and will also involve taking into account the situation in the Balkans and the neighbourhood, in particular Moldova," Macron said.

The European Commission's opinion on Ukraine's, Georgia's, and Moldova's applications for the membership candidacy is expected on June 17.
