Kuleba: It Is Unclear Why Germany Is Transferring Defence Systems but Not Tanks

Monday, 12 December 2022

Ukraine does not understand why the German government hesitates when it comes to battle tanks but, at the same time, supplies artillery to Ukraine.

"Frankly, we do not understand this line of argument," Dmytro Kuleba, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, said this in an interview with ARD, adding that if Ukraine is not sufficiently armed, the war will drag on, and this is not in the interests of either Ukraine or its Western partners.

Germany has promised Ukraine further supplies of weapons, but this does not include the Leopard 2 battle tank that the Kyiv government has repeatedly requested, Kuleba noted.

"Such a decision has not been made yet; there are no obligations. But we are working on it," the Foreign Affairs minister said.

According to Kuleba, the latest agreements with Berlin primarily concern defence systems, such as the modern IRIS-T air defence system and Flakpanzer Gepard anti-aircraft guns.

Earlier, it was reported that Germany continues negotiations with Washington and other partners regarding the supply of tanks to Ukraine but has not yet decided on the transfer of its Leopard 2 tanks.

Kuleba stated that the Ukrainian side is negotiating with Germany as well as the United States regarding the deployment of Patriot missile defence systems in Ukraine.
