Slovakia aims to start preparations for handing over its jets in the upcoming weeks.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovakia, Rastislav Káčer, has said this in an interview with "Interfax-Ukraine."

"We have not yet handed over MiG-29 to you but we are ready. We are in contact with our NATO partners about the procedure," he said.

According to him, they discussed it among other things at the last meeting with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

"Our Defence Minister explained to your president how this could be done. I think a Ukrainian delegation will be in Slovakia in the coming weeks. Then we together with our American friends will try to make it happen... I am very optimistic about this. I think it will happen soon. The jets will be in Ukraine," said Rastislav Káčer.

He added that he did not want to disclose the details to not harm the process.

Since September 1, Polish jets have been patrolling the airspace of Slovakia. The Czech Republic and Poland had agreed to protect Slovak airspace starting after Slovakia gives up its old Soviet-made MiG-29 jets to Ukraine, with protection lasting until the new American F-16 arrives.
