What Did Zelenskyy and Biden Agree on in US

Friday, 23 December 2022

Volodymyr Zelenskyy flew to Washington which was his first foreign visit since the full-scale Russian invasion.

This trip was without a doubt a landmark, a milestone for Ukraine in times of struggle against Russian aggression.

In addition to the official results which the parties announced publicly, there are more. Zelenskyy and Biden limited themselves to only hints which are no less important. And for at least two of the three issues raised, there are reasons to talk about an interim diplomatic victory for Ukraine.

According to EuroPravda sources, long before the trip, President Zelenskyy had made two crucial decisions regarding the resumption of his trips. The most important of them was that his first "military" visit should be to Washington.

The US are the main supplier of weapons and a financial donor to Ukraine in the war. Zelenskyy sought to emphasise this.

This trip was supposed to underline the US role in backing Ukraine and strengthen Biden and other pro-Ukrainian politicians (from both American parties).

Zelenskyy was able to do this because he has become a kind of symbol of democracy in the United States that embodies the heroism of all of Ukraine.

Voters (especially Americans!) love heroes.

The invitation from Biden to visit the USA, of course, was not enough for Volodymyr Zelenskyy to resume his trips overseas. There had to be a real reason for the first such visit. For example, the White House decision to unblock Patriot systems or jets for Ukraine.

So far, the first one has been achieved.

However, American air defence systems ae very important but this is not the only weapon that Ukraine needs.

Joe Biden unexpectedly acted as a "tank lobbyist" after meeting with Zelenskyy.

Following the joint press conference, he added that the United States was working to ensure that other states (without mentioning any) could provide more tanks to Ukraine. "We’ve worked with partners to get Ukraine tanks and other armoured vehicles," Biden said. He was justifying the US for blocking certain types of weapons, like ATACMS long-range missiles.

Zelenskyy's visit to the USA is important not only for those who monitor the provision of American weapons: the political signals were no less important for Ukraine.

There is a protocol feature that has not been noticed too much in Ukraine - the presidential negotiations, to which two team members from each president were invited: foreign ministers and security advisers.

American officials sat down as protocol required. Next to Biden was Secretary of State Antony Blinken, behind him was National Security adviser Jake Sullivan.

Instead, on the Ukrainian side, the Head of the Office of the President, Andrii Yermak, was closer to the President than the Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba.

Such an unusual "ranking" of the President's team was the right of the Ukrainian side. This is not a reason to insult Americans or anything. But such a protocol detail was meaningful: it signalises the US partners who in Ukraine is a crucial character in foreign policy.

It's time to move on to the main result of President Zelenskyy's visit to the US - ending the war.

Here, as well as in the situation with Patriot, the USA has recently demonstrated very positive changes, and Zelenskyy's visit has cemented them.

Currently, in contrast to August-September, there is no reason to say that the US is pushing Ukraine to "difficult compromises" in negotiations with Russia. Moreover, Zelenskyy said during the visit that Biden approved his approach: no peace until Russia completely withdraws from Ukrainian soil. Including Crimea.

A few hours after the presidential meeting, in his address to Congress, Volodymyr Zelenskyy clarified the agreements. According to him, Biden agreed to back the Ukrainian "peace plan" of 10 points, which without alternative provides for the de-occupation of the entire territory of Ukraine as a condition for ending the war. All of them, without any exceptions.

To this, however, it is worth adding that both presidents in Washington agreed: even this plan involves inevitable negotiations with the leader of the Russian Federation. To negotiate peace terms but after de-occupation. "This guy [Putin], he's going to fail. He's already failed," Biden said and added: "President Zelenskyy and I are united, two countries together, to make sure he [Putin] cannot succeed.I don’t think there’s any, any, any substitute for sitting down face-to-face with a friend or a foe and looking them in the eye."
