Spain to Provide Ukraine with four to six Leopard Tanks

Wednesday, 1 February 2023

Spain will provide Ukraine with four to six German-made Leopard 2A4 tanks that have been in storage for a long time.

The final amount will depend on the condition of the 53 tanks that have been stored in the 41st Logistics Group in Zaragoza for 10 years, as Spanish news outlet El Pais reports, quoting their sources in the government

The Spanish Ministry of Defence is currently in urgent negotiations with the military industry to repair the tanks.

The decision on the number of tanks will also depend on the contribution of other countries.

The Spanish military will also conduct an accelerated training course for Ukrainian tankers at a training ground near Zaragoza. At least 10 crews are planned to be trained, as well as mechanics and other personnel who service the equipment.

Spain has the second largest stock of Leopard tanks in Europe. Only Greece has more, and it has announced that it will not provide Ukraine with tanks.

Dmytro Kuleba, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, said that Ukraine will obtain 120-140 modern Western tanks in the first wave of aid from the allies.
