Tuesday, 14 February 2023

Norway has decided to send eight Leopard 2 tanks and up to four special purpose tanks to Ukraine.

"Because it is more crucial than ever to support Ukraine’s fight for freedom, we have decided to donate 8 tanks and up to 4 special purpose tanks to Ukraine. Several other allied countries have also decided to donate tanks," Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Haar Støre said, as the Ministry of Defence of Norway reports.

"The decision to donate Leopard 2-tanks and special purpose tanks has been made after close dialogue with both the Chief of Defence and other European countries. The war in Ukraine is nearing a critical phase and they are dependent upon timely and substantial support. We will also contribute with educating and training Ukrainian tanks-crew in Poland, along with other allied countries," said Norwegian Defence Minister Bjørn Arild Gram.

On January 26th, Norway announced its commitment to contribute to the international donation of tanks to Ukraine.

Special purpose tanks in the armoured engineering and bridge category will be considered what Ukraine needs most.

The funds will go towards ammunition and spare parts for the Leopard 2. The "tank package" will also include the ammunition and spare parts transfer. In addition, Norway will also contribute NOK 250 million to the EU-Ukraine Fund, the European Peace Fund. This will increase the impact of the Norwegian donation, Gram says.

"Norwegian military support to Ukraine consists of donations from our own stock, contributions to international collaborative efforts, donations of equipment straight from the industry and the training of Ukrainian military personnel.  At this point, we deem it absolutely necessary to donate from our own stock. It is vital for Norwegian and European security that the Russian aggression against Ukraine does not succeed," the Minister of Defense said.

As reported, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin listed the countries that have started preparations for sending Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine or have given a corresponding commitment.

"A group of countries, in particular Germany, Poland, Canada, Portugal, Spain, Norway, Denmark and the Netherlands, are working together on sending Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine," the head of the Pentagon listed
