West Discussing Fighter Jets to Ukraine – Danish Prime Minister

Thursday, 16 March 2023

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Thursday, commenting on Poland's decision to send MiG-29 to Kyiv, said that Western countries are now discussing the possibility of sending Ukraine modern fighters.

"The fighter jets have been a request from Ukraine for a long time. That's what we're discussing them in the allied circle. So yes, I know it is being considered in the allied group", Jyllands-Posten quotes Frederiksen.

Frederiksen later clarified that Denmark is also considering the possibility of sending its aircraft to Ukraine.

"Yes, we are looking at several different aspects. We are in a very, very close dialogue with our allies on this matter. I cannot say more," said the Danish Prime Minister.

Sending Danish F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine is also supported by the country's parliament. In particular, the spokesman for defence of the Conservative Party, Rasmus Jarlov, called them "a very important weapon for Ukraine's defence of its state."

The Danish Air Force currently uses F-16 fighters but will begin to replace them with more modern F-35s in the fall of 2023.

Earlier on Thursday, Polish President Andrzej Duda announced the transfer of four MiG-29s to Ukraine in the coming days. Slovakia is considering providing Ukraine with 10 of its 11 MiG-29 aircraft, which were decommissioned last year.
