G20 Meeting Fails to Agree Joint Statement Due to Ukraine's War Differences

Thursday, 2 March 2023

Foreign Ministers of the leading industrial and developing countries (G20) could not agree on a joint final statement because of divergences of opinion on the war in Ukraine.

According to Tagesschau, India has presented its own summary of discussions.

Most states again condemned the Russian aggressive war and demanded to withdraw its forces from Ukraine. Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Russia and China Sergei Lavrov and Qin Gang disagreed with two relevant points.

India's Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar told reporters following the meeting that a joint final declaration was not adopted because of "polarised views of some countries."

He stressed that India made great efforts to find a compromise. Jaishankar said the ministers have agreed on many issues like food and energy security, climate change, gender issues and counter-terrorism.

Earlier the U.S. expressed confidence that the G20 foreign ministers' meeting in India would condemn full-scale Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Before that, the EU delegation had refuted to support the G20 foreign ministers' statement in India without condemnation of Russia's war against Ukraine.

India, as the host party, stated that the war in Ukraine would be an important topic for discussion, but "issues related to food, energy and fertilising security, the impact of conflict on the economic challenges we face" will also receive "proper attention."

The foreign ministers meeting takes place a few days after the G20 finance ministers meeting in Bengaluru, which had also failed to reach a consensus on a joint statement.

Russia and China objected to a joint communique that retained language on the war in Ukraine.
