What Ukraine Should Do during New Revolution in Georgia

Thursday, 9 March 2023

The events of March 7 in Tbilisi (read more about them in the article "Fight for the European Future" (Ukr) shocked many Ukrainians. It leads to the question: what should be official Kyiv's reaction to this?

The editors of EuroPravda are convinced that Ukraine at all levels - from the president to society - should discard conventions and directly support the Georgian people, who are currently fighting not only against the government but also for their future.

Not only theirs.

About why Ukraine should be harsher with the Georgian authorities, read the article by EuroPravda editors Sergiy Sydorenko and Yurii Panchenko. Toss diplomacy? How should Ukraine act in relations with Georgia and its authorities? (Ukr)

Ukraine's support of the Georgian people at all levels will mean a direct diplomatic conflict with the Georgian authorities. But they have to do it, even realising that it will worsen relations with official Tbilisi (already bad but can be even worse).

Yes, it means "toss diplomacy." But this is exactly what Ukraine needs now. And here's why.

First, even traditional European diplomacy is no longer as "dry" as it would be 15-20 years ago.

There is more and more room for flatness and emotions in it. Yes, not without exceptions, but it probably will remain so. What is happening in Georgia now is undoubtedly exceptional and needs exceptional treatment.

Second, the current Georgian government is becoming openly hostile to Ukraine.

Yes, the Georgian authorities accept Ukrainian refugees and send humanitarian aid to Ukraine. But at the same time, the official Tbilisi refuses to help with weapons and accuses Kyiv of wanting to drag it into a war with Russia.

These are not the only issues of the country's relationship.

Third, even though the official Tbilisi prefers unfriendliness, the people of Georgia, in the overwhelming majority, remain friendly to Ukraine.

Fourth, another important change in modern diplomacy - given a multipolar world with multiple fault lines, it is no longer possible to "make friends with everyone."

Ukraine's choice is EU and NATO membership with very clear obligations for a candidate state.

The current government of Georgia made a civilisational choice. Passing the bill, guaranteed to destroy European integration, is a conscious choice of Tbilisi. And it makes the path to the West closed.

The task of Georgian citizens is to overthrow this government. Ukraine, under any circumstances, should not be a part of it.

It is also not up to us to decide how exactly Georgians should make the current regime a legacy of history. They should decide whether a revolutionary path is necessary or an evolutionary one is sufficient.

We have the right and even the duty to state directly and without diplomatic hints that we do not expect anything from the current Georgian government and we do not hope for an agreement with it.

Just as the EU and the US are doing now, making unusually harsh statements about the events in Tbilisi.

Here is good news.

It seems that official Kyiv has more or less the same position.
