Zelenskyy reminds EU leaders that long-range weapons such as Tomahawks are not exclusive to the US

Thursday, 23 October 2025 —

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made it clear that Ukraine is counting on receiving long-range missiles, including Tomahawks, from European nations.

Zelenskyy said at the European Council summit in Brussels that the point of discussing long-range weapons for Ukraine is to ensure that the Putin regime feels the real consequences of its war.

"I urge you to support everything that helps Ukraine get such capabilities, because it really makes a difference for Russia. And these long-range weapons are not only in the United States. Some European countries also have them, including Tomahawks. We are already talking to the countries that can help," Zelenskyy said.

Zelenskyy added that Putin knows very well that long-range weapons could truly change the course of the war.

On 17 October, Zelenskyy travelled to the White House to meet Trump following two consecutive phone conversations. The meeting was planned to discuss highly sensitive issues, including the possible supply of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine.

The day before the meeting, Trump called Vladimir Putin. He said afterwards that Putin "did not like" the idea of Tomahawks being provided to Ukraine, adding that it "may not be perfect timing" to impose secondary sanctions on buyers of Russian energy.

It was later reported that Trump had made it clear in a private conversation with the Ukrainian president that he is not yet considering supplying Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine.
