US expects Hungary to give up Russian oil and gas

Monday, 27 October 2025 —

Matthew Whitaker, US Ambassador to NATO, has stated that Washington expects Hungary to abandon Russian oil and gas.

Whitaker said on Fox News the US expects Hungary, Slovakia and Türkiye to develop and implement a plan to reduce their dependence on Russian energy. He added that the US is ready to help Hungary eliminate its reliance on Russian oil and gas.

"You know, Hungary, unlike many of their neighbours, has not made any plans or made any active steps. So we're going to continue to work with them and we're going to work with their neighbours like Croatia and other countries that can help them wean themselves off," Whitaker said.

US President Donald Trump expects Europe to completely abandon Russian oil and gas. He recently imposed sanctions on Rosneft and Lukoil.

Following that, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that his country is working on finding a way to bypass US sanctions.
