Orbán to travel to US to discuss oil sanctions on Russian oil with Trump
Hungary's Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has said that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and US President Donald Trump will meet next week to discuss US sanctions against Russian oil.
As reported by Bloomberg, Szijjártó told journalists in Budapest on Monday 27 October that this week, Hungary will assess the "precise legal and physical impact" of the sanctions Trump imposed against Russian companies last week.
"If needed, the prime minister will be able to personally discuss this question next week in Washington," Szijjártó said.
Szijjártó added that Trump and Orbán are set to meet in Washington in the second half of next week, but did not specify the date.
Trump said that Europe must fully abandon Russian oil and gas. Recently, he has imposed sanctions on Rosneft and Lukoil, Russia's largest oil companies, and their subsidiaries.
Following those sanctions, Orbán has said that his country is working on finding a way to bypass US sanctions imposed on Russian oil companies.
Matthew Whitaker, US Ambassador to NATO, has stated that Washington expects Hungary to abandon Russian oil and gas.
