Zelenskyy and European leaders speak with Trump's envoy Witkoff

Monday, 1 December 2025 —

On Monday 1 December, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone call with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Rustem Umierov, Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council and the head of the Ukrainian delegation. French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer joined this conversation.

Zelenskyy said that, besides Witkoff and Umierov, the conversation included Macron and Starmer.

"It was an important briefing, and we agreed to discuss more details in person – our teams will coordinate schedules for possible further contacts," Zelenskyy wrote on X.

AFP reported that Witkoff met with Umierov again in Florida on Monday, following an earlier meeting there.

The conversion with Witkoff took place ahead of his meeting with Russia's leader Vladimir Putin, which is set for Tuesday 2 December.

On the evening of 30 November, Ukrainian time, talks between Trump's team and the Ukrainian delegation on a "peace plan" took place in Florida. American media began reporting details about how the nearly five-hour meeting unfolded and what was discussed.

After reporting on the meeting, Zelenskyy said that the negotiations had been "constructive", while Trump again spoke of a "good chance" of a "peace deal".
