Trump believes Ukraine should hold presidential election

Tuesday, 9 December 2025 —

US President Donald Trump believes that Ukraine should hold a presidential election, as a long time has passed since the previous vote.

"Yeah, I think it's time. I think it's an important time to hold an election. They're using war not to hold an election, but, uh, I would think the Ukrainian people would ... should have that choice. And maybe Zelenskyy would win," Trump said in an interview with Politico.

Trump added that the situation in Ukraine "gets to a point where it's not a democracy anymore".

In February, during remarks to journalists at Mar-a-Lago, Trump said he supported Russia's demands for Ukraine to hold a presidential election.

The US president also said that he was uncomfortable saying it, but the approval rating of the Ukrainian leader had supposedly fallen to 4%.

In response, the Ukrainian president said that Trump had become a victim of Russian disinformation.
