Zelenskyy calls for creation of European army: "We can't rely solely on NATO"

Thursday, 22 January 2026 —

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed the opinion that, under the current circumstances, Europe needs to create a unified armed force so as not to place all its hopes on NATO guarantees.

Zelenskyy reiterated at the World Economic Forum in Davos that, in his opinion, Europe needs its own unified armed forces that "can truly defend Europe".

"Today, Europe relies only on the belief that if danger comes, NATO will act... If Putin decides to take Lithuania or strike Poland, who will respond? Right now, NATO exists thanks to the belief that the United States will act, will not stand aside and will help. But what if it doesn't? " Zelenskyy asked.

He suggested that all European leaders are asking themselves this question and hope to hear specifics from Trump.

"Some wait, hoping the problem will disappear. Some have started acting, investing in weapons production, etc. But let's remember until America pressured Europe to spend more on defence, most countries were not even trying to reach 5% of GDP, the minimum needed to ensure security," Zelenskyy recalled.

Zelenskyy called the symbolic number of troops that Europeans are sending to Greenland "unserious" and urged them to think about how this looks to their adversary, Russia, and their ally, Denmark.

In addition, the Ukrainian president criticised the slow pace of punishing Russia for its aggression.
