Media: US security guarantees for Ukraine will depend on troop withdrawal from Donbas
US security guarantees for Ukraine will depend on whether Kyiv agrees to withdraw its troops from the non-occupied part of Donbas.
Eight Financial Times sources said US President Donald Trump's administration has signalled to Ukraine that American security guarantees would be conditional on Kyiv agreeing to a peace deal. The proposed agreement would include the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from parts of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts that are not occupied by Russia.
The US also told Kyiv that it could offer additional weapons to strengthen Ukraine's armed forces in peacetime if Ukraine agrees to the deal.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on 25 January that a document on US security guarantees for Ukraine was fully ready for signing.
Politico, a Brussels-based politics and policy news organisation, reported that the US considers its security guarantees for Ukraine more valuable than European ones, despite Washington's refusal to send troops.
Russia reiterated its demand for the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the entire Donbas ahead of trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi on 23-24 January.
