Ukraine's foreign minister: Ukraine plans to hold Lukashenko accountable and will push for sanctions

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has said that Kyiv plans to hold self-proclaimed Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko accountable for assisting Russia in its war of aggression and will also initiate sanctions against Belarus.

Asked in an interview with European Pravda about the status of Alexander Lukashenko, Sybiha replied that Ukraine, like other European countries, does not consider him the legitimately elected president of Belarus.

"He is a so-called president," Foreign Minister Sybiha said.

The minister was also asked whether Ukraine plans steps to bring Lukashenko accountable for his role as leader of Belarus in facilitating Russia's aggression against Ukraine.

"I also believe that the current Belarusian regime is co-responsible for Russian aggression. In 2022, it provided Belarusian territory for the offensive against Ukraine. Missiles were launched from their territory. This makes them an accomplice to aggression against Ukraine. And even now we see new elements of support for Russian aggression from the Lukashenko regime. They are providing their infrastructure for drone attacks on Ukrainian territory," Sybiha noted.

"I am deliberately not specifying details, but we know them, we legally document every such case, notify the UN of the Belarusian regime's complicity in the aggression, and will raise the issue of sanctions against those involved – in particular individuals and companies engaged in building this infrastructure," the foreign minister said.
