UK defence secretary and Ukrainian counterpart sign roadmap for 100-year partnership in Kyiv

Friday, 9 January 2026 —

UK Defence Secretary John Healey, who is on a visit to Kyiv, and his Ukrainian counterpart Denys Shmyhal have signed a roadmap to implement the 100-year defence partnership agreement previously signed by the two countries.

Shmyhal said that during Healey's visit, Ukraine and the UK signed a roadmap for the development of their century-long defence partnership.

"The document formalises defence cooperation for 2026 across a number of key security areas. This is an important step towards implementing large-scale projects made possible by the One Hundred Year Partnership Agreement between Ukraine and the United Kingdom," he said.

Shmyhal added that he, alongside representatives of Ukraine's intelligence services and the General Staff, briefed Healey on the aftermath of Russia's latest large-scale combined overnight attack. "Strengthening air defence and ensuring a sufficient supply of ammunition for these systems remain key priorities," he stressed, adding that the UK has made a significant contribution to Ukraine's defence capability.

In January 2025, Ukraine and the UK signed an agreement on a 100-year partnership.

In January 2024, Ukraine and the UK signed a bilateral security agreement, the first in a wider set of deals Kyiv later struck with its international partners.
