Kremlin insists Zelenskyy-Putin meeting must be held in Moscow

Monday, 2 February 2026 —

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has said that contact between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian leader Vladimir Putin is only possible in Moscow.

As reported by Interfax, a Kremlin-aligned Russian news agency, Peskov was asked whether the Kremlin is considering organising a meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin "on neutral territory".

"Zelenskyy proposes contact; Putin said it is possible in Moscow. This position remains our position," Peskov said.

Peskov described Moscow's stance as "fairly consistent".

"We remain open to negotiations. Work is being carried out through working groups. We welcome this and are ready to continue this work in the interests of a settlement in Ukraine," he added.

Zelenskyy insisted on a meeting format involving the leaders of Ukraine, the United States and Russia.

Zelenskyy said on 1 February that the next trilateral meetings between Ukraine, Russia and the United States will take place in Abu Dhabi on 4 and 5 February.

US President Donald Trump reiterated earlier that he sees a chance of successful talks to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
