Rubio publicly clashed with G7 counterparts over the wars in Iran and Ukraine

Friday, 27 March 2026 —

US State Secretary Marco Rubio and other G7 foreign ministers have publicly exchanged sharp remarks over Russia's war against Ukraine and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

As reported by Bloomberg, the dispute centred on European countries' reluctance to respond to US President Donald Trump's call to help protect the Strait of Hormuz.

In addition, Europe is generally not supporting the United States in its operation against Iran.

"The United States is constantly being asked to help in a war," Rubio said, referring to Ukraine.

"But when the US had a need, he didn't get positive responses," he added.

European governments say they are ready to join efforts to protect the Strait of Hormuz only on the condition that hostilities cease.

In addition, US bases in Europe have played a key role in military operations, while some European bases have provided logistical support.

"It is irritating, I have to say," said German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on Deutschlandfunk radio ahead of a planned meeting with Rubio.

Germany has not received a clear request from the US side regarding assistance with the Strait of Hormuz, he added.

"At this point, the legal requirements for us for such an operation aren't met. And there is no specific request for us to take action at this time," the minister said.

Meanwhile, French Foreign Ministry spokesman Pascal Confavreux said that planning for an operation to protect the Strait of Hormuz is well under way.

"It would take place after the end of the bombing first. To be only in a defensive situation. We are preparing such a mission with all the willing partners. But we have made it very clear that this war is not our war and we don't want to be entangled in it," Confavreux said.

As noted in the report, Ukraine remains Europe's main concern, and its leaders are seeking to isolate Russia by linking the two wars.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on Thursday that Russia is providing Iran with intelligence to help locate and target Americans.

Meanwhile, UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper recalled that Iran had previously supplied Russia with drones for use in the war against Ukraine.

"But we have also seen support from Russia provided to Iran in the Middle East conflict as well," she said.

In contrast, Rubio said that "Ukraine is not America's war, and yet we've contributed more to that fight than any other country in the world".

"So, it'll be something to examine that the president will have to take into account down the road," he added.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb earlier expressed hope that his US counterpart Donald Trump would not abandon his promise to end Russia's war against Ukraine.

At the same time, Trump previously criticised German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for remarks that Berlin does not consider the US war with Iran to be its concern.

"That's why when I heard the head of Germany say, 'this is not our war' about Iran, I said: 'Well, Ukraine's not our war, we helped, but Ukraine's not our war,'" he said

According to media reports, following the start of the US operation in Iran, US President Donald Trump is losing interest in negotiations on a peaceful settlement of Russia's war against Ukraine.
