US closes embassies in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait

Tuesday, 3 March 2026 —

The United States has announced the closure of its embassies in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait after both came under Iranian drone attacks.

As reported by CNN, the US embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, closed on Tuesday following strikes by two Iranian drones.

The US embassy in Kuwait has been closed "until further notice", and the US State Department has ordered non-emergency personnel to leave the country. On Monday, footage obtained by Reuters and verified by CNN showed smoke billowing near the US embassy, while a source told CNN the site was hit on both Sunday and Monday.

The US State Department has also urged American citizens to leave 14 Middle Eastern countries: Iran, Iraq, Bahrain, Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Yemen and Syria.

US President Donald Trump said US forces were "knocking the crap" out of Iran, but that a "big wave" was still to come.

On 3 March, he said it was already "too late" for negotiations with Iran.

As of 3 March, six US service members are known to have been killed in the operation.
