Pentagon chief talks about sinking of Iranian warship

Wednesday, 4 March 2026 —

An American submarine had sunk an Iranian warship in international waters, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said on Wednesday.

As reported by CNN, according to Hegseth, this was the first sinking of an enemy vessel by torpedo since the Second World War.

"An American submarine sunk an Iranian warship that thought it was safe in international waters. Instead, it was sunk by a torpedo," Hegseth said.

Hegseth added that American forces had sunk Iran's "prize ship", the Soleimani, named after former Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, who was killed by US forces during President Donald Trump's first term in office.

"I guess POTUS [Donald Trump] got him twice," he said.

Iranian frigate IRIS Dena sank off the coast of Sri Lanka following a submarine attack; at least 101 people are believed to be missing.

On Wednesday, Türkiye's Ministry of Defence said it had intercepted a ballistic missile launched from Iran towards the country's airspace.
