Ukraine receives oil spill response equipment from Finland

Friday, 6 March 2026 —

Finland has delivered a significant package of aid to Ukraine to help respond to oil spills.

The Embassy of Finland in Kyiv noted that Finland had sent 35 lorries of oil spill response equipment to Ukraine.

The Finnish Border Guard supplied oil skimmers with power sources, booms, personal protective equipment and other tools for containing and cleaning up oil spills.

"Oil spill response is an effective means of reducing the short-term and long-term effects of harmful substances released into the environment. Compounds contained in oil are extremely harmful to the ecosystem. Even small concentrations can contaminate groundwater and other water sources that are used," the embassy said.

The embassy noted that Ukraine had submitted an urgent request for assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism at the end of 2025.

"Cooperation between the authorities worked extremely well. Our collaboration in oil spill response was once again efficient and effective. We collected a significant amount of equipment for donation without compromising our own response capability," said Ville Estlander, Senior Officer for Rescue Services from the Ministry of the Interior.

At the end of February, the Finnish government announced €20 million in humanitarian aid for Ukraine, to be delivered via UN humanitarian agencies and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

It was also reported that France would provide over €70 million in grant funding, with part of it directed towards Ukraine's energy sector.
