Ukraine Gives Up Relations with Government of Georgia

Monday, 27 June 2022

We can indeed state that relations between Ukraine and Georgia are now at their lowest level since the restoration of independence in 1991.

Relations have deteriorated sharply since the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war. Kyiv was outraged by Tbilisi's refusal to impose sanctions and later accused its partner of trying to help Russia circumvent Western sanctions.

The final "point of no return" was passed on June 24. EuroPravda editor Yuri Panchenko writes in his article Point of No Return: Ukraine Finally Changed Its Strategy in Relations with Georgia.

On June 24, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the participants of the rally in the center of Tbilisi, "Home, to Europe." It was not only a pro-EU rally but also an anti-government event.

In fact, the President of Ukraine de facto supported the change of government in Georgia. Zelensky surely did not mention this directly in his speech. He could not let himself say that, but the leader of his parliamentary group David Arakhamia did it for Zelensky.

Unlike Zelensky, Arakhamia directly named the one he thought was the main culprit in the current failure of the Georgian bid.

"I remember how we experienced each other's grief together and dreamed of returning to our European family one day. And, perhaps, that would have happened if one oligarch had not taken the whole country hostage," he said.

Everyone in Georgia knows this oligarch. He is the founder of the ruling party "Georgian Dream," former prime minister, and country's shadow leader Bidzina Ivanishvili.

The Ukrainian authorities have deliberately escalated relations with Tbilisi.

Zelensky took the terminal shot the next day, firing the ambassador to Georgia. Under current circumstances, the appointment of a new one is unlikely to happen soon.

What did Ukraine want to achieve with such a démarche?

Kyiv has ended the possibility of full-fledged cooperation with the current Georgian authorities. However, he signaled to the pro-European opposition that Kyiv fully supports Georgia's European aspirations. It is ready to help but does not see the current government wanting to move toward Europe.
